The Building Blocks of
Malaysian Architecture

DEKODA hypothesizes The Building Blocks of Malaysian Architecture, as an allegory to the perennial debate on what is, and what isn’t, Malaysian Architecture - an argument often emotional and personal, seen through sometimes ethno-centric, political and rhetoric lens.

∵ Architecture in Malaysia

= Malaysian,

∴ Malaysian Architecture?

The vernacular, the melting pot of multi-culturism, the legacy of colonizations, post-Merdeka modernists and contemporary edifices have all contributed to The Building Blocks of Malaysian Architecture.

In this age of increasing globalization coupled with Malaysian Architects’ quest to promote our capability and

works to the world, do we join the bandwagon of designing McBuildings*

- replicable anywhere and everywhere, or do we conscientiously design with our unique Malaysian identity and spirit?

*derived from the term ‘McMansion’ - a play on words, combining "McDonald's" (referring to mass-produced, generic fast food) and

"mansion," implying a large, often poorly designed, and mass-produced home.
